Past Research Projects
Tetlin National Wildlife Refugre Baseline Monitoring

Desper River, Tetlin NWR

We are currently finalizing a quality assurance plan to guide the collection of baseline biological data in streams of Alaska's National Wildlife Refuges.  In the summer of 2007 we will begin a three-year effort to characterize baseline biology and habitat in three streams of the Tetlin NWR; work in other refuges may follow.

Biological Assessment for Southeast Alaska Streams

We developed a biologically-based water quality monitoring index for southeast Alaska streams. The index will enable a time-integrated assessment of biotic integrity based on aquatic invertebrate (and potentially diatom) assemblages. This work is funded by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s Alaska Clean Water Actions program.

Anchor River Spruce Bark Beetle Impacts

We are collecting data to predict the long-term habitat impacts to this important salmon stream resulting from the massive bark beetle epidemic that has killed extensive stands of spruce forest across southcentral Alaska. This project is funded by the U.S. Forest Service, State and Private Forestry.
